The further development of competence in English is the major goal of this course. Strengths and weaknesses in language are identified. Work is completed in the areas of reading, writing, critical thinking, speaking and listening, in preparation for the Regents, PSAT and SAT exams, and Junior English 200. Attention is given to research skills, vocabulary, and grammar.

English 10 Honors concentrates on developing critical reading, analytical, and writing skills. Students develop an enriched vocabulary via SAT preparation, as well as through close study of literature. Scholars read, reflect upon, and react to highly-acclaimed full-length works of literature. In addition, they work with a variety of short stories, nonfiction narratives, and poetry. As preparation for the Advanced Placement and International Baccalaureate English programs, students use literary theory, rhetorical analysis, and advanced criticism and research techniques.

The tenth grade Humanities course integrates Art, English, and Global History in a manner that fosters deeper understanding of the curriculum. The global history content of the course is the same as Regents-level classes. In the tenth grade, the global history content begins with the Age of Revolutions (1750) and ends with the Global Connections and Interactions theme of the modern world. The interdisciplinary connections help scholars better understand the historical and cultural development of the regions being studied. Scholars who choose to take their Art, English, and Global History requirements through Humanities should expect an increased emphasis on reading, writing, critical thinking, and independent research projects, while also developing artistic skills and aesthetic appreciation, including portfolio assessment. A team of three faculty members, one from each department, teaches Humanities in a double period. One unit of credit Art, English, and Global History is awarded respectively from each department at each grade level.
